UP Tourism Launches Sangam Tent Colony for Makar Sankranti Pilgrims in Prayagraj

The Uttar Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation has launched a dedicated Sangam Tent Colony near the riverfront in Prayagraj. This initiative provides a structured, safe, and comfortable stay option for visitors ahead of the Makar Sankranti snan during the ongoing Magh Mela.

A Planned Facility for Growing Pilgrim Inflow

This tent colony is distinct from privately operated tent cities. The UPSTDC planned it specifically to support the growing inflow of pilgrims during the Magh Mela period. It is located at Arail sector-7, before Triveni Pushp.

The Sangam Tent Colony features 50 cottages. It caters to families, senior citizens, and pilgrims who prefer regulated accommodation close to the mela area. The layout and facilities were designed to allow devotees to stay near the Sangam without facing the uncertainties that often accompany peak-season travel.

Three Categories of Accommodation

The accommodation is available in three categories:

  • Premium cottages: Priced at Rs 15,000 per night
  • Luxury cottages: Priced at Rs 11,500 per night
  • Deluxe cottages: Priced at Rs 7,500 per night

The facility includes 12 premium cottages, 8 luxury cottages, and 30 deluxe cottages. The tariff includes satvik meals. This allows pilgrims to follow their daily rituals without additional planning.

Spiritual and Cultural Amenities

The tent colony carries a spiritual ambience with yagyashalas and regular bhajan and kirtan sessions. A Kalagram within the campus showcases local art and craft traditions. This adds a cultural layer to the stay experience.

Supporting Local Livelihoods

The initiative also created space for helping local livelihoods during the mela. Under the ‘One District One Product’ programme, stalls featuring Prayagraj's traditional moonj craft were set up inside the tent colony.

Artisans sell handcrafted baskets, pen stands, food containers, planters, and decorative items. These products draw interest from devotees and tourists.

Government Perspective

Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh commented on the initiative. He said, "The Sangam Tent Colony reflects CM Yogi Adityanath's approach of ensuring that large religious gatherings are supported by planned facilities that serve both pilgrims and local communities. Magh Mela is not only a festival of faith but also an opportunity to strengthen tourism systems and provide income avenues for local artisans and service providers. The UPSTDC-managed tent colony is aimed at meeting the pressure of rising footfall around Makar Sankranti."

Booking Information

Online bookings are available through UPSTDC. This helps visitors plan their stay in advance for the Magh Mela period.
