Valley Queen Heritage Train Now Year-Round in Rajasthan

North Western Railway Extends Valley Queen Heritage Train Service to Near Year-Round Operation

In a significant boost to heritage tourism in Rajasthan, the North Western Railway (NWR) has announced the extension of operations for the Marwar Junction–Khambli Ghat–Marwar Junction Valley Queen metre gauge train. The service will now run from April 1 to September 30, effectively making it a near year-round attraction for the first time in two years, responding to rising tourist demand across the region.

Preserving India's Metre Gauge Legacy Through Scenic Routes

The Valley Queen train offers travellers a unique journey through the picturesque Aravalli Hills, showcasing India's fading metre gauge railway heritage. The route features tunnels, sharp curves, and sweeping panoramic views, attracting those seeking offbeat and nostalgic travel experiences. Amit Sudarshan, Chief Public Relations Officer of NWR, highlighted the historical context, stating, "In 2024 and 2025, the train services remained suspended during summers from April to July. However, this will be the first time the train will be operational for the whole year."

This strategic move is part of broader efforts to promote heritage rail circuits in Rajasthan, enhancing the state's appeal as a cultural and historical destination. The train itself is a testament to railway history, comprising:

  • An AC Executive Car for premium comfort
  • Two metre gauge coaches maintaining traditional design
  • A power car ensuring smooth operations
  • A General Second coach reserved for staff, limiting passenger capacity for a more exclusive experience

With a capacity of 59 reserved berths and a one-way fare of Rs 1,000, the Valley Queen provides a limited and comfortable travel option, preserving the charm of vintage rail travel.

Synergy with Eco-Tourism and Cultural Attractions

Railway officials anticipate that the extended operations will synergize with increasing tourist footfall to the Jawai Leopard Safari region. As Jawai emerges as a premium eco-tourism destination, visitors heading for leopard sightings are likely to incorporate the heritage train ride into their itineraries, boosting its appeal and utility. Sanjay Kaushik noted, "With Jawai fast emerging as a premium eco-tourism destination, the Valley Queen stands to benefit from the influx of safari tourists."

This integration not only enhances tourist convenience but also positions the route as a must-do experience on Rajasthan's tourism map. Tourists can combine the journey with visits to nearby attractions, adding cultural depth to their travel plans. Key highlights include:

  1. Sumerpur: A town rich in local history and architecture
  2. Jain Temples in Rajsamand District: Offering spiritual and artistic insights
  3. Scenic Landscapes: Through the Aravalli Hills for photography and nature appreciation

Kaushik added, "The extended operations will not only enhance tourist convenience but also position this route as a must-do experience on Rajasthan's tourism map." This initiative reflects a growing trend towards sustainable and heritage-focused tourism, leveraging Rajasthan's unique assets to attract domestic and international travellers alike.
