Bihar's Valmiki Tiger Reserve Sees Tourist Surge, Bamboo Huts a Hit
Valmiki Tiger Reserve Tourist Numbers Soar This Season

Bihar's sole tiger sanctuary, the Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) near Bettiah, is witnessing an unprecedented influx of visitors this tourist season. Both domestic and international travellers are flocking to this ecological gem, with its innovative and sustainable bamboo hut accommodations emerging as a primary attraction.

International Acclaim for Scenic Beauty and Sustainability

Recently, tourists from nations like the United States and Germany have lauded the reserve for its pristine environment and unique stay experience. As a dedicated eco-tourism hub, VTR offers a pollution-free vista of dense forests, flowing rivers, and the distant Himalayan foothills. The specially designed bamboo huts, which harmonise with the natural setting, have gained massive popularity for combining comfort with an environmentally conscious design.

Stephen Francis, a visitor from the United States, expressed his delight, stating he found the bamboo structures unique and his overall experience so wonderful that he plans to return. "The jungle safari was quite thrilling. I saw many wild animals passing by from a distance from the jungle safari vehicle," he remarked.

Echoing his sentiments, Renate Margaret from Germany described VTR as a rare blend of nature and adventure. "The VTR is a wonderful place surrounded by water, forests, and mountains. The pollution levels are low, the arrangements are good, and the jungle safari offers exciting encounters with wild animals," she said, adding that spotting deer and other wildlife heightened their excitement.

More Than Wildlife: A Holistic Experience

Another German tourist, Frank Werner Heinz, emphasised that the reserve offers more than just a conventional wildlife destination. He portrayed it as a holistic experience that seamlessly merges adventure, spirituality, and an eco-friendly lifestyle. He specifically praised the bamboo huts and bamboo beds for being both visually appealing and comfortable.

Highlighting the deeper value of the material, botany teacher Ratnesh Kumar pointed out bamboo's traditional and scientific significance. He noted its mythological importance and natural antibacterial and antifungal properties, which are believed to contribute to better sleep, making it a favoured choice among health-conscious tourists.

Record-Breaking Footfall and Improved Facilities

Forest conservator and VTR deputy director Neshmani K confirmed the steady rise in tourist numbers over the last decade, attributing it to enhanced facilities and the site's inherent natural appeal. "Facilities have been improved in key areas like Valmiki Nagar, Govardhan and Manguraha, making accommodation, food and transportation easily available," he explained.

Official forest department records underscore this growth trend vividly:

  • September this year: 5,135 tourists visited the forest areas.
  • October: The number increased to 6,543.
  • November: Tourist count surged dramatically to 15,769.
  • As of December 20: Already 12,938 tourists had undertaken forest treks, indicating sustained interest despite the winter chill.

Participation in the reserve's jungle safaris has also seen a sharp increase this season, solidifying VTR's growing reputation as a top-tier eco-tourism destination in India. This convergence of sustainable practices, natural beauty, and thrilling wildlife experiences is successfully putting Bihar's wilderness on the global tourism map.
