The ancient city of Varanasi, revered as the spiritual heart of Sanatan Dharma, is set to undergo a spectacular transformation as night falls. An ambitious illumination project worth ₹24.10 crore will soon bathe the city's most sacred sites in radiant light, creating a breathtaking new visual identity for one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities.
Historic Landmarks to Shine Brighter
Under the government's comprehensive 'Action Plan for Kashi and Sarnath', facade lighting will be installed at ten major religious and tourism sites across Varanasi. This initiative aims to enhance the grandeur of these historic locations during evening hours while showcasing Kashi's rich cultural, religious and architectural heritage to visitors after dark.
The selected sites represent some of Varanasi's most iconic spiritual landmarks, including Assi Ghat, Dashashwamedh Ghat, Panchganga Ghat, Kedar Ghat, Sankat Mochan Temple, Kaal Bhairav Temple, Annapurna Temple, Bharat Mata Temple, Durga Kund Temple and Tulsi Manas Temple. Each location holds profound religious significance and attracts millions of pilgrims and tourists annually.
Boosting Safety and Global Appeal
According to Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) vice-chairman Purna Bora, the lighting initiative will serve multiple purposes beyond mere aesthetics. "This project will make the city's iconic spiritual landmarks both attractive and safe at night," Bora explained, "while also highlighting their architectural heritage and historical value in a completely new way."
The illumination plan is expected to give a significant push to night tourism in Varanasi, potentially extending visitor hours and creating indirect benefits for local businesses, handicraft vendors, and cultural activities. By allowing tourists to experience the city's spiritual atmosphere after sunset, Varanasi can offer a refreshed cultural experience that differs dramatically from daytime visits.
Reinforcing Global Cultural Status
Bora emphasized the project's broader significance, stating that "This project will reinforce Varanasi's position on the world tourism map by showcasing the religious, cultural and historical significance of Kashi in a new light." The initiative represents a significant step toward realizing the vision of developing Kashi as a global cultural capital, further strengthening Varanasi's international identity.
Once completed, the illuminated ghats and temples are expected to create stunning visual spectacles that could become iconic images of modern Varanasi while preserving the ancient city's spiritual essence. The project demonstrates how traditional religious centers can embrace modern infrastructure enhancements without compromising their cultural integrity.
The illumination project forms part of broader efforts to enhance visitor experiences in Varanasi while preserving the city's ancient character. By combining technological innovation with cultural preservation, Varanasi continues to evolve as both a living spiritual center and a world-class tourism destination.
