Customized Classics Turn Heads on Campus Avenues
The Willys-derived Mahindra Jeeps, ranging from the iconic CJ3B to later Major models, are once again commanding attention on the internal roads of the university. They form part of a proud procession of customized vintage off-roaders, each telling a story of automotive passion and personal expression. This resurgence is not entirely new; students recall these jeeps as familiar sights several years ago, with alumni—now professionals or recently retired—fondly remembering their heydays before a brief disappearance.
Today, they have returned in a fresh avatar, driven by a blend of modification trends, trend-setting, and philosophical expressions of individuality. The current mild weather in Chandigarh, a pleasant window before the scorching summer arrives, provides the perfect backdrop for zipping around in these romanticized machines.
Roots in North India's Thriving Modification Hub
Many of these vehicles trace their origins to the bustling modification business in northern India, particularly Dabwali in Haryana. This town is renowned among automobile enthusiasts for its specialized workshops that excel in rebuilding and customizing old vehicles. From these hubs, the rugged machines often find their way to young owners, especially students who relish driving them on city roads and through the wide, tree-lined avenues of Panjab University.
The evergreen jeeps retain their old-world charm with signature features like upright windshields, flat fenders, and high bonnets, closely resembling the classic Willys design that inspired the Mahindra CJ3B. However, most are far from stock configurations, undergoing extensive rebuilds to enhance practicality for present-day driving.
Modern Upgrades Meet Timeless Design
Owners frequently integrate modern mechanical components to improve reliability and performance. Common modifications include diesel engines sourced from newer Mahindra vehicles like the Bolero, upgraded gearboxes, refined steering systems, and enhanced braking setups. These updates ensure the jeeps can handle contemporary traffic conditions while preserving their iconic character.
Angad Dhillon, owner of a 1984 Mahindra CJ3B fitted with a Bolero Turbo DI engine, explains the rationale behind such upgrades. "The original engine was not very practical today. The Bolero Turbo DI engine makes it more reliable and easier to maintain," Dhillon said. "At the same time, the body and character of the CJ3B are what people like about it."
Adapting to Modern Regulations and Campus Rules
Modern traffic regulations have significantly influenced restoration practices. Many older models originally lacked seat belts, but owners now install them as a safety necessity. "If you drive these vehicles in the city, you have to update them according to the rules," Dhillon noted. "Seat belts are necessary now."
Another critical adaptation involves the roof structure. Completely open-top jeeps, locally known as ‘landi’ or hoodless vehicles, are prohibited on Chandigarh roads and are not permitted entry into the Panjab University campus. Consequently, most owners keep canvas hoods installed when entering the university grounds, though some drivers remove them for short drives along internal roads once inside.
Unmistakable Presence and Youthful Appeal
These vehicles are conspicuously eye-catching, often parked near landmarks like the Student Centre or Arts Block, where they attract curious onlookers who pause to inspect modifications or snap photographs. "In a parking lot full of modern cars, these stand out immediately," remarked Arshveer Gill, a law student. "They look completely different."
The revival exists partly in a grey area regarding documentation. While many jeeps operate with extended registrations and proper paperwork, students acknowledge that not every vehicle seen regularly on campus ventures onto city roads. Some are primarily kept within the university confines, taken out mainly for short drives or ‘gedis’ around the campus.

Regardless of their paperwork status, the impact is undeniable. Each time one of these vintage jeeps traverses Panjab University, its distinctive diesel chug turns heads, serving as a powerful reminder that decades after they first rolled onto Indian roads, their enduring spirit continues to captivate new generations of admirers.
