Former Indian diplomats have reacted to Bangladesh summoning the Indian envoy over remarks made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The diplomatic row has sparked discussions on bilateral relations and the handling of sensitive issues between the two nations.
Veena Sikri's Perspective
Former diplomat Veena Sikri stated that the step taken by Bangladesh was unnecessary. She emphasized that illegal immigration from Bangladesh to India is a real and ongoing issue that both sides must acknowledge and address. Sikri highlighted the need for proper bilateral dialogue, recalling that the matter was once recognized during Begum Khaleda Zia's tenure as Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She also noted that stricter measures implemented in India have led some migrants to return to Bangladesh, indicating progress in managing the issue.
KP Fabian's Views
Another former diplomat, KP Fabian, said that the summons was understandable given the sensitivity of the remarks. However, he stressed that foreign policy-related remarks should come through the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Fabian suggested that official channels should guide such statements in the future to avoid diplomatic friction. He underscored the importance of maintaining clear communication protocols between state and central governments on matters affecting international relations.
The incident underscores the delicate balance in India-Bangladesh ties, where domestic political statements can have cross-border implications. Both diplomats agreed that while dialogue is essential, it must be conducted through appropriate official channels to preserve mutual trust and cooperation.
