Indian National from Odisha Captured in Sudan Conflict

An Indian citizen has been taken into custody by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia amid the ongoing violent conflict in Sudan. The individual has been identified as Adarsh Behera, a 36-year-old resident of Odisha. The incident occurred last month when the RSF fighters captured the city of El Fasher.

Indian Government's Diplomatic Efforts in Motion

Confirming the distressing development, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addressed the media during a weekly briefing. He stated that the Indian government is aware of the situation and is actively engaged in efforts to secure the individual's freedom. "We are in contact with the Sudan government and international organisations so that the Indian national can be safely freed and we can ensure his security," Jaiswal said.

This diplomatic push involves multiple channels. The Indian embassy, currently operating from Port Sudan, is closely monitoring the case. Furthermore, the Sudanese ambassador to India, Mohammed Abdalla Ali Eltom, has confirmed that authorities from his nation are in direct communication with Indian officials regarding the abduction.

Unpredictable Situation in a War-Torn Nation

Expressing concern over the well-being of the captive, Ambassador Eltom highlighted the volatile nature of the situation. He told reporters, "We hope that he is not harmed by the militia. The situation is unpredictable, you never know what they will do." This case underscores the severe risks faced by civilians in Sudan, which has been gripped by violent conflict between the RSF and the national army.

The capture of Adarsh Behera brings into sharp focus the perils for foreign nationals in conflict zones. The Indian government's multi-pronged approach, involving direct talks with the Sudanese government and coordination with international bodies, reflects a determined effort to ensure the safe return of its citizen.
