External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi held their first bilateral meeting since the escalation of the US-Israel and Iran conflict in February, focusing on the West Asia crisis and its implications, including the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. The meeting took place on the sidelines of a multilateral event.
Iran's Assurance on Hormuz Strait
Araghchi later described the engagement as fruitful, stating that they discussed regional developments. He emphasized that Iran will always fulfill its historical duty as the protector of security in the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian minister sought to address India's concerns over energy supply disruptions due to any blockade, saying, "Iran is a reliable partner of all friendly nations, who can rely on the safety of commerce." He noted that Tehran will work with friendly countries like India to facilitate the movement of commercial ships through the strait.
India's Role in Regional Diplomacy
At a press conference, Araghchi said India can play a greater role in promoting diplomacy and peace in the region. "India is a friend to almost all countries in the Persian Gulf, in the north and south. We appreciate any positive, constructive role played by India," he said, while blaming the US for the economic consequences of the conflict. His remarks echoed those of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who earlier stated that India could contribute to diplomatic efforts for long-term peace. Lavrov suggested that Pakistan is helping establish dialogue between the US and Iran, but for long-term mediation between Iran and its Arab friends, India could play that role due to its vast diplomatic experience.
Situation in the Strait of Hormuz
Regarding the strait, Araghchi clarified that it remains open to all vessels except those belonging to countries at war with Iran. "We have allowed a number of Indian vessels to pass. Safe passage of all vessels is our policy and in our interest. At the same time, the blockade by the US and insecurity due to their aggression persist," he said. Several Indian LPG tankers are still awaiting clearance from Iran to sail through, and India has remained diplomatically engaged with Tehran on the issue. Jaishankar is understood to have underscored the need for freedom of navigation during the meeting.
Pakistan-Mediated Talks
Araghchi also addressed the Pakistan-mediated talks between Iran and the US, stating that they have not failed but the situation is difficult. "There is still hope. We couldn't achieve a deal in Islamabad, mostly because of the maximalist positions taken by the US and their shifting of goalposts. We are familiar with those tactics and cannot accept anything beyond a fair and balanced deal," he said.
