NIUA Team Conducts Field Study in Ranchi for River Management Plan
A specialized team from the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) arrived in Ranchi on Thursday to undertake a comprehensive field study and detailed site inspections of various rivers and water bodies within the jurisdiction of the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC). This significant survey initiative follows Ranchi's selection as one of 60 cities across the expansive Ganga Basin designated to develop a comprehensive Urban River Management Plan (URMP) under the central government's flagship 'Namami Gange' programme.
Focus on Comprehensive Conservation and Restoration
The primary objective of the Urban River Management Plan is to ensure the holistic conservation, restoration, and sustainable management of all critical water bodies located within the RMC limits. The plan will specifically prioritize the rejuvenation and ecological revival of the Harmu River, the urban stretches of the Subarnarekha River, and the city's major lakes and ponds, which are vital for the local environment and community.
Collaborative Framework and Stakeholder Engagement
This ambitious management framework is currently being meticulously crafted by the NIUA in close collaboration with the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), with substantial technical expertise and financial support provided by the World Bank. Following the completion of the initial field inspections, a crucial meeting of the multi-stakeholder working group was convened under the chairmanship of Municipal Commissioner Sushant Gaurav.
During the proceedings, Commissioner Gaurav emphasized the critical importance of collective effort, stating, "Active involvement and cooperation from both government departments and the general public are absolutely vital for maintaining the city's delicate ecological balance. The sustainable preservation and long-term health of these essential water bodies rely heavily on fostering positive, lasting shifts in human behavior and community participation."
The visit and subsequent discussions mark a pivotal step forward in Ranchi's urban environmental governance, aiming to integrate scientific planning with community action to protect and restore its aquatic ecosystems for future generations.
