PM Modi in Bhutan: Inaugurates Hydro Project

Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a significant two-day state visit to Bhutan on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, a trip that underscores the deep-rooted friendship between the two neighboring nations. The visit is strategically timed to coincide with the 70th birthday celebrations of the revered Fourth King of Bhutan, Jigme Singye Wangchuck.

A Milestone in Energy Partnership

A central highlight of the visit is the inauguration of the 1020-MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project, a major joint venture developed by India and Bhutan. Prime Minister Modi and the current King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, will jointly inaugurate this landmark project. This inauguration is seen as a cornerstone of the bilateral energy partnership, representing a significant step towards sustainable development and energy security for the region.

Honoring a Legacy and Strengthening Ties

The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that this is a special visit to honor the Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the father of the current monarch. The Fourth King is credited with playing an instrumental role in shaping the unique relationship between India and Bhutan from 1974 to 2016, collaborating with Indian leaders on critical issues ranging from energy cooperation to security.

During his packed itinerary, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold crucial meetings with both King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Tshering Tobgay. These discussions are expected to pave the way for future collaboration.

Spiritual Connection and New-Age Collaboration

Adding a profound spiritual dimension to the diplomatic engagement, the visit coincides with the exposition of the sacred Piprahwa relics of Lord Buddha from India. PM Modi will offer prayers to these holy relics at the Tashichhodzong in Thimphu and participate in the Global Peace Prayer Festival organized by the Royal Government of Bhutan.

Looking ahead, the two countries are set to explore new frontiers in their partnership. Key areas identified for future cooperation include:

  • Fin-tech, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship
  • Space Technology
  • Enhancing connectivity through proposed rail links and inland waterways transport.

The Indian government stated that the primary objective of the Prime Minister's visit is to strengthen the special ties of friendship and cooperation between India and Bhutan. This partnership, built on deep mutual trust, goodwill, and a shared spiritual heritage, continues to be a model for international relations.
