Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday praised Jawaharlal Nehru's message at the 1955 Bandung Conference and recalled Biju Patnaik's role in Indonesia's independence struggle. Speaking at an event in Jakarta, Modi underscored the historical ties between India and Indonesia.
Nehru's Bandung Vision
Modi referred to Nehru's address at the Asia-Africa Conference in Bandung, where the first Indian prime minister spoke against colonialism and for solidarity among newly independent nations. "Nehru's words at Bandung still resonate today," Modi said, emphasizing India's commitment to a multipolar world order.
Biju Patnaik's Covert Mission
The prime minister also highlighted the lesser-known operation in July 1947, when Nehru, yet to officially become India's first prime minister, ordered a covert rescue of Indonesian leaders Sutan Sjahrir and Mohammad Hatta. The mission was entrusted to Biju Patnaik, an ace pilot and future Odisha chief minister, who flew them to safety. "Biju Patnaik's bravery exemplified India's support for Indonesia's freedom," Modi added.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Modi's remarks come amid efforts to deepen strategic and economic cooperation between India and Indonesia. The two nations have shared maritime boundaries and cultural links for centuries. The event was part of Modi's broader outreach to Southeast Asia, reinforcing India's Act East policy.
