Sutlej Club Controversy Over Political Event During Haryana CM Visit

The Sutlej Club in Ludhiana has become embroiled in a controversy after allegedly hosting a political event on June 28 during the visit of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, despite constitutional provisions barring such activities on the premises. The event, which included meetings with workers and leaders, has drawn sharp criticism from club members who claim it violated the club's rules and caused inconvenience due to heightened security.

Alleged Violation of Club Constitution

According to the club's constitution, political events are not permitted on the premises. However, on June 28, a programme was organized in connection with Saini's visit, where he reportedly interacted with party functionaries and sought feedback from workers. Some club members have objected, stating that the event was political in nature and thus a clear violation of the club's constitutional provisions.

An elected office-bearer and executive committee member submitted a written complaint to the club's general secretary, expressing surprise that the event was organized without the knowledge of the elected representatives. The complaint stated, "To my utter surprise, despite being an elected office-bearer of the club and a member of the executive committee, I had absolutely no prior knowledge or intimation of such an event. It is difficult to understand how an event of this magnitude could be organised without informing the elected representatives responsible for the affairs of the club."

Security Overreach and Member Inconvenience

The complaint further highlighted that the club premises were turned into a high-security zone, with over 50 armed police personnel stationed in the lobby, parking area, and other common spaces. Members faced rude behavior from security personnel, were asked to remove their vehicles immediately, and experienced restricted movement within the club. The complaint noted, "Several members were inconvenienced and subjected to rude and discourteous behaviour by the security personnel. Members were instructed to immediately remove their vehicles, movement within the club was restricted and the welcoming atmosphere that members rightfully expect from their club was missing."

In addition, some members have sought clarification on whether prior written approval for the event was obtained from the club's president-cum-DC, Ludhiana, and the general secretary, as required by club rules.

Official Response and Investigation

The general secretary has reportedly forwarded the complaint to the club's president, Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain. Responding to the query, Jain said he had directed the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) to submit a report on the matter, as he was on leave when the event took place. The club's management is expected to review the complaint and take appropriate action based on the findings.

The controversy has sparked debate among members about the club's adherence to its own rules and the need for transparency in organizing events. As the investigation proceeds, the club faces pressure to address the grievances and ensure such incidents do not recur.
