Illicit Liquor Consignment Seized in Delhi, Linked to AAP Candidate's Family
In a significant development during the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, the Delhi Police on Tuesday intercepted a vehicle in the Okhla area and seized a large consignment of illicit liquor. The seizure has created a political storm as the investigation has revealed direct links to a candidate contesting in the upcoming MCD bypolls for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
The Seizure and Political Connections
Acting on a tip-off, police officials stopped a vehicle which was found to be carrying more than 100 bottles of Royal Stag whisky. A critical detail noted by the authorities was that the bottles were explicitly labeled "For Sale in Haryana Only", indicating their illegal transport and potential sale within the national capital.
During interrogation, the accused individual in the vehicle disclosed a crucial piece of information. He identified himself as the brother-in-law of Anuj Sharma, who is the AAP party's candidate for the MCD bypoll from Ward No. 163, Sangam Vihar.
Further police verification uncovered another layer to the case. The intercepted vehicle used in this illicit activity is officially registered in the name of AAP leader Jyoti Kohli, who is the sitting ward councillor from the adjacent Ward 162, Tigri.
Ongoing Investigation and Legal Proceedings
Following the seizure, the Pul Prahladpur police station has formally registered a case. The primary focus of the ongoing investigation is to determine the intended purpose of the liquor consignment.
Authorities are probing whether the liquor was meant for distribution and consumption during the election period, which would be a serious violation of the Model Code of Conduct enforced by the Election Commission. The timing of the incident, just as the code is in effect, has raised serious questions about compliance with electoral laws.
Political Repercussions and Next Steps
This incident places the Aam Aadmi Party in a challenging position, with direct connections established between the seized contraband and the close relative of one of its bypoll candidates. The case has drawn immediate attention to the conduct of political figures and their associates during the sensitive election period.
The investigation continues as police work to unravel the full scope of the operation and establish the final destination and purpose of the seized illicit liquor.
