The BJP Mahila Morcha Mangaluru City South wing held a protest march from PVS Circle to the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) on Monday. The women's wing of the BJP accused the Congress party of opposing the 33% reservation for women in Parliament.
BJP Leader Criticizes Congress
BJP Dakshina Kannada district secretary Poornima stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a major decision to grant political powers to women. The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam was drafted with the aim of empowering women in all sectors, including politics. She emphasized that the government introduced the bill to bring women into the mainstream of politics. However, the Congress and its allies have opposed it, thereby insulting the women of India, she added.
Poornima further noted that if the bill had been passed, the number of Lok Sabha members from Karnataka would have increased from 28 to 42. Additionally, the representation of women in Parliament would have also increased.
MLA Vedavyas Kamath's Remarks
Mangaluru City South MLA D Vedavyas Kamath said that women should have open opportunities in politics and should hold key positions in leading the country. He stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed to implement the women's reservation bill with this intention. However, Congress blocked the bill, aiming to prevent women from entering the mainstream. He claimed that if the bill was passed, the number of Lok Sabha seats would have increased to 800, and more than 200 seats would be available for women.
Kamath questioned, "Why is it difficult for Congress if women come forward? Women have already served as prime minister, president, defence minister, and foreign minister in the country. The people of the nation will never forgive the insult to women," he added.
