The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated the crucial scrutiny process for a total of 2,516 nomination papers filed by aspirants looking to contest the upcoming civic elections across the city's 227 electoral wards. This process commenced on Wednesday, following the closure of the nomination filing window which ran from December 23 to December 30.
Nomination Numbers and BJP's Surprising Setback
Data released by the civic body reveals a significant gap between forms distributed and those finally submitted. While officials handed out 11,391 nomination forms during the filing period, only 2,516 were formally submitted. The scrutiny process has already led to the rejection of several applications due to technical errors in filing.
In a notable development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faced an unexpected setback. The party's intended candidates for ward numbers 211 and 212 – Shakil Ansari and Mandakini Khamkar respectively – failed to submit their nomination papers to the returning officer. A BMC official involved in the process confirmed, "In Prabhags number 211 and 212, we did not receive any applications of candidates from the BJP." This omission leaves these wards open for other contenders.
Ward-Wise Filing Trends and Scrutiny Outcomes
The nomination filings were not evenly distributed. The M/East ward (Deonar) recorded the highest number of applications, with 182 forms filed. It was followed closely by the K/West ward (covering Andheri, Lokhandwala, and surrounding areas), which saw 133 nomination papers submitted.
As the scrutiny got underway, the high-profile ward 226 in Colaba witnessed immediate drama. The nomination forms of candidates from the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) were found lacking prerequisites and were cancelled. This turn of events leaves the BJP candidate, Makarand Narwekar, primarily competing against independent candidates in that ward.
Next Steps in the Electoral Process
The meticulous scrutiny of all 2,516 nominations is scheduled to continue until January 2. Following this verification phase, the BMC will publish the final and official list of candidates who are cleared to contest the municipal polls. This list will set the stage for the campaigning and voting phases for Mumbai's crucial civic body elections.
