BPF Wins Baokhungri Seat in Assam's First Election

NEW DELHI: Rupam Chandra Roy of the Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) won the Baokhungri assembly seat in Assam, defeating Sapali Marak of the Indian National Congress by a margin of 23,710 votes in the constituency's first-ever election.

Roy secured 62,677 votes, while Marak polled 38,967. Pratibha Brahma of the United People's Party, Liberal finished third with 21,245 votes. Independent candidate Rajib Brahma secured 13,037 votes, while candidates from Gondvana Gantantra Party and the All India Trinamool Congress, along with other independents, received marginal support.

Baokhungri is one of Assam's newest constituencies, carved out in 2023 as part of the delimitation exercise. Located in Kokrajhar district within the Bodoland Territorial Region, the seat forms part of the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency, an area known for its complex tribal and ethnic composition that often shapes electoral outcomes.

With no sitting MLA or electoral history, the 2026 election marked the first assembly contest in Baokhungri, making it an open and closely watched race. The contest saw multiple parties attempting to establish an early foothold, including the BJP, which had fielded Roy, and the Congress, which backed Marak. The presence of regional players like the UPPL added another dimension to the fight.

The broader Assam assembly elections in 2026 recorded a historic voter turnout of 85.9%, the highest since the state's first polls in 1951. This surpassed previous records of 84.67% in 2016 and 82.04% in 2021, reflecting strong public participation despite challenging weather conditions in several areas.

Data from the Election Department also showed that women voters outpaced men, with a turnout of 86.5% compared to 85.3% among male voters, marking the highest-ever female participation in the state's electoral history.

The result in Baokhungri gives the BPF an early advantage in shaping the political trajectory of this newly formed constituency, setting the tone for future contests in the region.
