In Bongaigaon, Diptimayee Choudhury of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) secured a decisive victory in the 2026 Assam assembly elections, polling 72,247 votes. She defeated Congress candidate Girish Baruah by a significant margin of 24,998 votes. Independent candidate Chakradhar Das finished third with 32,093 votes, as the constituency delivered a clear mandate in favour of the AGP.

Constituency Overview

Bongaigaon is an Assembly constituency located in Assam's Bongaigaon district, situated in the western part of the state along the Brahmaputra River plains. It is one of the 10 Assembly segments that constitute the Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency. In the 2016 assembly elections, AGP's Phani Bhusan Choudhury had won this seat, defeating the Indian National Congress (INC) candidate by a margin of 31,320 votes.

The Assam assembly elections in 2026 were held in a single phase on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4. The estimated voter turnout in Bongaigaon Assembly constituency was 90.83% as of 7 pm, compared to 81.8% in 2021. Statewide, the 2026 assembly elections recorded a historic voter turnout of 85.9% by evening on April 9, the highest since the state's first polls in 1951. Large numbers of people turned out to vote despite rain, surpassing the previous highs of 84.67% in 2016 and 82.04% in 2021.
