Counting of votes for the repoll in the 144-Falta Assembly constituency began on Sunday at Diamond Harbour Women's University amid heavy security deployment. The Election Commission had ordered fresh polling in the constituency after reports of electoral irregularities during the West Bengal Assembly elections.
Repolling Conducted Under Strict Supervision
Repolling was conducted on May 21 under strict supervision, while BJP candidate Debangshu Panda claimed the process remained peaceful and expressed confidence in his party’s victory. The BJP recently formed its first government in the state after winning 207 seats, with Suvendu Adhikari taking oath as Chief Minister.
Security Arrangements at Counting Center
Security personnel were deployed outside the strong room at Diamond Harbour Women's University as counting of votes for the repoll got underway. The Election Commission had ordered repolling across all 285 polling stations after irregularities were reported during the April 29 phase of the 2026 Assembly elections.
The BJP later secured a massive victory in the state by winning 207 seats and formed its first-ever government in West Bengal, with Suvendu Adhikari taking oath as Chief Minister.
BJP Candidate Claims Peaceful Polling
BJP candidate Debangshu Panda said polling during the repoll was conducted peacefully with a “festive atmosphere” at polling stations and expressed confidence in a BJP victory. “The atmosphere is fine, there is no problem. There is a festive atmosphere. Voters are coming, casting their votes, and leaving; it's a good atmosphere. BJP will win,” Panda told ANI after earlier alleging large-scale irregularities, voter intimidation and booth manipulation during the original polling process.
Election Commission Ordered Fresh Poll
The Election Commission of India had ordered fresh polling across all booths in the Falta constituency after reporting “severe electoral offences and subversion of the democratic process” during the April 29 polling. Repolling in the constituency was conducted on May 21 under heavy security and institutional supervision, while repolling was also held in 15 booths of Paschim Magrahat and Diamond Harbour assembly constituencies.
