GPS Tracking Mandated for Election Vehicles in Coimbatore to Ensure Fair Polls
In a significant move to bolster election integrity, the Election Commission has mandated the installation of GPS tracking devices in all vehicles transporting electronic voting machines (EVMs), voter verifiable paper audit trails (VVPATs), and other sensitive materials for the upcoming assembly election in Coimbatore. This initiative aims to provide real-time monitoring and prevent any irregularities during the polling process.
Comprehensive Vehicle Tracking Implementation
On Tuesday, at the Police Recruitment School grounds in Coimbatore, election officials oversaw the fitting of GPS devices on more than 330 trucks designated for carrying EVMs and related sensitive materials. Simultaneously, 330 SUVs assigned to zonal officers were equipped with both GPS systems and walkie-talkie communication devices. This dual setup ensures seamless coordination and tracking capabilities across the election fleet.
According to an election official, the Election Commission of India has made it compulsory to install GPS tracking devices in all mobile patrolling vehicles and those involved in transporting election-sensitive materials. This measure is designed to foster a free, fair, and transparent electoral environment by enabling continuous oversight of election personnel and resources.
Enhanced Monitoring and Emergency Response
From a centralized EVM control room, election officials and central observers can now monitor the exact location, movement patterns, and speed of all equipped vehicles in real-time. This includes not only primary transport vehicles but also reserve units, ensuring comprehensive coverage to prevent unauthorized stops or deviations from planned routes.
In case of emergencies or reports of electoral malpractice, officials can swiftly dispatch the nearest flying squad based on precise GPS coordinates, thereby enhancing responsiveness and security. This proactive approach is expected to significantly reduce the risk of tampering or delays in the election logistics chain.
The implementation of GPS technology represents a critical step towards modernizing election management, with Coimbatore serving as a model for future electoral processes across India. By leveraging real-time data, the Election Commission aims to uphold the highest standards of accountability and transparency, ultimately strengthening public trust in the democratic system.
