The much-anticipated municipal corporation election in Mohali is set to take place on May 26, as announced by the Punjab State Election Commission. The election process will officially begin with the issuance of the notification on May 13, allowing candidates to file their nominations. This election will determine the representatives for the 50 wards of the Mohali Municipal Corporation.
Election Schedule and Key Dates
According to the election schedule released by the commission, the last date for filing nominations is May 20. Scrutiny of nominations will be conducted on May 21, and candidates can withdraw their nominations by May 22. The voting will be conducted on May 26 from 7 am to 6 pm, and the counting of votes will take place on the same day after the polling concludes.
Preparations and Model Code of Conduct
The state election commission has already issued the model code of conduct, which will come into effect from the date of the notification. The code prohibits any announcements of new projects or policies that could influence voters. The district administration has been directed to ensure a smooth and fair election process. Adequate security arrangements will be made at polling stations to prevent any untoward incidents.
Political Parties Gear Up
Major political parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Congress, and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), have started preparing their strategies and candidate lists. The election is expected to witness a multi-cornered contest, with several independent candidates also in the fray. The previous municipal election in 2018 had resulted in a hung house, leading to a period of political instability. This time, parties are aiming for a clear majority to ensure smooth governance.
Voter Demographics and Issues
The Mohali Municipal Corporation has over 2.5 lakh registered voters. Key issues in this election include sanitation, water supply, road infrastructure, and urban development. The rapid expansion of the city has led to increased demands for better civic amenities. Candidates are expected to focus on these issues during their campaigns.
The election commission has also made arrangements for electronic voting machines (EVMs) and voter-verified paper audit trails (VVPATs) to ensure transparency. Voters are encouraged to check their names in the electoral rolls and carry valid ID cards to the polling stations.
