Massive Pre-Poll Seizures and Electoral Preparations in Tamil Nadu
In a significant crackdown ahead of the upcoming elections, the Election Commission of India has confiscated cash, gold, liquor, and drugs valued at a staggering Rs 1,262 crore across Tamil Nadu. State Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik announced this major enforcement action on Wednesday, highlighting the commission's rigorous efforts to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process.
Detailed Breakdown of Seized Items and Legal Actions
According to official statements, the seized items include cash amounting to Rs 543 crore, which was recovered during systematic vehicle checks conducted by dedicated surveillance teams. In addition to the financial seizures, the commission has taken strong legal measures, registering 163 First Information Reports (FIRs) for various electoral violations. The social media monitoring cell has been particularly active, ensuring the removal of 2,180 URLs from multiple online platforms to curb misinformation and unlawful campaigning.
Comprehensive Voter Registration and Demographic Insights
Providing a detailed overview of the electoral rolls, Patnaik disclosed that Tamil Nadu boasts a total of 5.73 crore registered voters. This substantial electorate comprises 2.93 crore female voters, 2.83 crore male voters, and 7,728 third-gender voters, reflecting an inclusive and diverse voter base. Notably, the state has welcomed 14,59,039 first-time voters, indicating robust youth participation in the democratic process.
Extensive Polling Infrastructure and Special Initiatives
To facilitate smooth voting, the Election Commission has established 75,064 polling stations across 33,133 locations throughout Tamil Nadu. This infrastructure is supported by 1,06,418 ballot units, along with 75,064 control units and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines to ensure accuracy and transparency. In a move to promote inclusivity, the commission has set up 249 model polling stations, 325 stations managed entirely by women, and 71 stations operated by persons with disabilities. Furthermore, 29 booths will be managed by youth, and several districts are piloting environmentally friendly green polling stations.
Robust Security Measures and Digital Safeguards
Ensuring law and order during the elections, the commission has deployed 300 companies of Central Armed Police Forces, supplemented by 83,875 local police personnel. Addressing concerns about mobile phone usage, Patnaik clarified that while devices are strictly prohibited inside polling booths, a special initiative provides mobile collection facilities outside the stations for voter convenience. To combat digital bribery and online influence, the commission is collaborating closely with cyber crime units to monitor social media activities and uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
These comprehensive preparations underscore the Election Commission's commitment to conducting free, fair, and secure elections in Tamil Nadu, with a focus on transparency, inclusivity, and technological vigilance.
