Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) candidate N Elaiyaraaja secured a decisive victory in the Uthangarai Assembly bypoll, garnering 70,201 votes and winning by a margin of 5,198 votes. He defeated AIADMK's T M Tamilselvam, who polled 65,003 votes. The Congress candidate R Kuppusamy finished third with 60,993 votes, trailing the winner by 9,208 votes.

In 2016, AIADMK's N Manoranjitham had won with 69,980 votes, defeating DMK's S Malathy, who secured 67,367 votes, by a margin of 2,613 votes.
