Kolkata: In a significant assurance to the voters of West Bengal, Chief Electoral Officer Gyanesh Kumar has categorically stated that no eligible voter's name will be removed from the electoral rolls in the state. This statement comes amid concerns and allegations from various political parties regarding the ongoing revision of electoral rolls.
Clarification on Voter Removal
Addressing the media, Kumar emphasized that the Election Commission is committed to ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process. He clarified that the deletion of names from the electoral rolls only occurs in cases of death, shifting of residence outside the constituency, or duplicate entries. No eligible voter will face removal without proper verification and due process.
Political Reactions
The assurance has been welcomed by several political parties who had earlier expressed apprehensions about potential disenfranchisement of voters. Leaders from both the ruling and opposition camps have acknowledged the importance of maintaining accurate and inclusive electoral rolls for the upcoming elections.
The Election Commission has also urged citizens to check their names in the electoral rolls and report any discrepancies to the authorities. Special camps and online facilities are being provided to facilitate this process.
Gyanesh Kumar further stated that the revision of electoral rolls is a continuous process and that the commission is taking all necessary steps to ensure that no eligible voter is left out.
