In a significant move responding to widespread public criticism, Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) has initiated the replacement of temporary bamboo barricades with sturdy steel grills along Janpath, one of the city's most prominent thoroughfares.
Citizen Concerns Spark Infrastructure Upgrade
The decision comes after numerous complaints from residents and commuters about the bamboo barricades causing traffic congestion and posing safety hazards. The temporary structures had become an eyesore and were frequently damaged, creating additional challenges for both pedestrians and motorists.
"The bamboo barricades were not only visually unappealing but also created significant traffic bottlenecks," explained a senior BSCL official. "After considering public feedback, we decided to install permanent steel grills that will enhance both safety and the overall aesthetic appeal of Janpath."
Enhanced Safety and Durability
The new steel grills offer multiple advantages over their temporary predecessors:
- Superior durability and weather resistance
 - Enhanced pedestrian and vehicular safety
 - Improved traffic flow management
 - Modern aesthetic that complements the city's smart city vision
 - Long-term cost effectiveness

Progressive Implementation Strategy
BSCL has adopted a phased approach to the installation process, carefully managing traffic disruptions during the transition. The work is being conducted during off-peak hours to minimize inconvenience to daily commuters while ensuring timely completion of the project.
"We understand that infrastructure upgrades can cause temporary disruptions," the official added. "However, the long-term benefits of permanent steel structures will far outweigh the short-term inconveniences. This is part of our commitment to making Bhubaneswar a more livable and organized city."
Positive Public Response
Early reactions from citizens have been largely positive, with many appreciating the authorities' responsiveness to public feedback. The move is seen as a step in the right direction toward creating more organized and safer urban spaces in Odisha's capital city.
The initiative aligns with Bhubaneswar's broader smart city objectives, demonstrating how citizen engagement can directly influence urban development decisions and lead to tangible improvements in city infrastructure.
