Delhi Government Launches Investigation into Fatal Foot Overbridge Collapse

New Delhi: The Delhi government has taken swift action following the tragic collapse of a foot overbridge (FOB) in the Roop Nagar area of north Delhi, which resulted in the death of a woman. Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Verma announced on Tuesday the formation of a three-member committee tasked with investigating the incident and submitting a comprehensive report within 48 hours.

Immediate Response and Safety Measures

In addition to the investigative committee, Minister Verma has ordered a city-wide safety audit of all similar foot overbridges. This proactive measure aims to prevent future tragedies by identifying and addressing potential structural vulnerabilities across Delhi's infrastructure.

Details of the Collapsed Bridge

The 60-foot FOB, which spanned the Najafgarh drain near Mother Dairy in Roop Nagar, collapsed earlier on Tuesday. Officials revealed that the bridge was approximately 33 years old and had significantly deteriorated over time. A structural inspection conducted in March 2025 deemed the bridge unsafe, leading authorities to close it for public use in July 2025 and implement necessary restrictions.

"Despite these precautions, some individuals continued to use the bridge, which ultimately led to this unfortunate incident," officials stated.

Preliminary Findings and Official Statements

Initial assessments suggest that the collapse was likely caused by the structural deterioration of the bridge. Minister Verma emphasized the committee's mandate, saying, "We have constituted a committee to examine all aspects, including the condition of the structure and the circumstances leading to the collapse. Responsibility will be fixed based on the findings, and necessary action will follow."

Incident Timeline and Response

Police received a PCR call about the collapse on Tuesday morning. The victim, identified as a beggar, was sitting near one end of the bridge at the time of the incident. The area has since been fully cordoned off to prevent any further accidents.

Political Reactions and Demands

Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav criticized the administration, highlighting a pattern of governance failures. "People are dying in accidents every other day in the city, whether due to bridge collapses, falling into drains, waterlogging, potholes, or other infrastructure issues," he said.

Yadav demanded an administrative inquiry into the condition of dilapidated bridges, buildings, institutions, and roads across Delhi. He also called for an ex gratia payment of Rs 50 lakh to the family of the deceased woman, stating, "The administration has totally failed to renovate the dilapidated civic infrastructure."

Broader Implications

This incident underscores the urgent need for regular maintenance and timely upgrades of aging urban infrastructure. The Delhi government's response, including the safety audit, reflects a commitment to addressing these critical issues, but it also raises questions about the effectiveness of previous inspections and enforcement measures.

As the investigation proceeds, all eyes will be on the committee's findings and the subsequent actions taken to ensure public safety and hold accountable those responsible for the lapse.
