In a significant move that accelerates the Delhi Metro's ambitious Phase-IV expansion, Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena has given his crucial approval for the allotment of land belonging to the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). This decision clears a major infrastructural roadblock for the pivotal Rithala-Bawana-Narela-Kundli corridor.
Land Allotment Details and Financial Terms
The administrative nod specifically covers the land required for constructing the elevated viaduct, or guideway, between Rithala and Rohini Sector 25. As per the approved terms, DMRC will receive 50 square metres of land at the Rithala sewage treatment plant on a permanent basis. This allotment will be formalized through a long-term lease agreement spanning 99 years.
Additionally, the metro corporation has been granted 1,286 square metres of land on a temporary basis for a period of four years to facilitate construction activities. For this strategic allotment, DMRC will make a payment of Rs 75.5 lakh to the Delhi Jal Board, marking a formal transaction between the two government entities.
Boosting Connectivity in Northwest Delhi and Beyond
The Rithala-Bawana-Narela-Kundli corridor is a cornerstone of the Phase-IV project, promising to dramatically enhance public transport connectivity in the rapidly developing regions of Northwest Delhi. Once completed, it will provide a seamless metro link to areas like Bawana and Narela, which have seen substantial residential and industrial growth but remain underserved by high-capacity rapid transit.
Furthermore, the corridor is strategically designed to extend Delhi Metro services towards the neighbouring state of Haryana, with its terminal point at Kundli. This extension is expected to ease inter-state commuter traffic, promote economic integration in the National Capital Region (NCR), and provide a sustainable travel alternative for thousands of daily passengers.
Clearing the Path for Phase-IV Progress
The Lieutenant Governor's approval resolves a key logistical hurdle that had the potential to delay this segment of the Phase-IV network. Land acquisition and inter-agency coordination are often among the most complex challenges in large-scale urban infrastructure projects within Delhi.
With this green light, DMRC can now proceed with full-scale construction planning and execution on this stretch. The move underscores the administration's commitment to advancing the Delhi Metro's expansion, which is critical for decongesting the city's roads and providing an efficient, eco-friendly mass transit system to its growing population and expanding urban limits.
