The Bengaluru Gardeners and Builders Association (GBA) has issued a urgent appeal to citizens to inspect and remove dangerous trees from their premises before the onset of the monsoon season. The plea comes in the wake of increasing incidents of tree falls during heavy rains, which have caused significant damage to property and posed risks to human life.
Why the Urgency?
With the monsoon expected to hit Bengaluru in the coming weeks, the GBA emphasizes that proactive measures can prevent accidents. Trees that are dead, diseased, or structurally weak are particularly vulnerable to strong winds and heavy rainfall. The association notes that many such trees are located in residential areas, parks, and along roads, making them a hazard to pedestrians, vehicles, and buildings.
Key Recommendations
The GBA has provided a list of guidelines for citizens to follow:
- Inspect trees regularly: Look for signs of decay, cracks, leaning, or dead branches.
- Consult arborists: Seek professional advice for tree removal or pruning.
- Remove hazardous trees: If a tree poses an immediate threat, arrange for its safe removal.
- Report to authorities: Notify the local municipal corporation about dangerous trees on public land.
The association also warns against attempting to remove large trees without proper equipment or expertise, as this can lead to accidents.
Community Responsibility
The GBA stresses that tree safety is a shared responsibility. By taking timely action, citizens can protect themselves and their neighbors. The association has offered to assist residents in identifying hazardous trees and connecting them with certified tree removal services.
Last year, Bengaluru witnessed several tree falls during the monsoon, resulting in casualties and extensive property damage. The GBA hopes that this year, with collective effort, such incidents can be minimized.
