Kerala Transport Minister C P John has stated that the state government's scheme to provide free travel for women on Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses will cost between Rs 712 crore and Rs 1,300 crore annually. Speaking to reporters on Monday, John said the exact financial implications would be clarified after the Cabinet meeting scheduled for June 10.
Scheme Details Pending Cabinet Approval
The minister explained that Chief Minister V D Satheesan would announce the full details of the scheme following the Cabinet meeting. The initiative, aimed at enhancing women's mobility and financial independence, has been a key promise of the ruling government. However, the substantial fiscal burden has raised concerns among opposition parties and economic analysts.
Financial Impact and Operational Challenges
The wide cost range reflects variables such as the number of women commuters, frequency of travel, and operational adjustments required. KSRTC, which already faces financial strain, will need to manage increased demand without compromising service quality. The government is exploring compensatory measures, including central funding and efficiency improvements, to offset the subsidy.
John emphasized that the scheme would be implemented in phases, starting with select routes, to assess feasibility and public response. He assured that women from all backgrounds, including students and working professionals, would benefit equally.
