Navi Mumbai Civic Body Reports Robust Property Tax Collection with Digital Surge
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has achieved a significant milestone in its property tax collection efforts for the current financial year, amassing a total of Rs 650 crore to date. This impressive figure represents collections from 182,894 taxpayers out of the city's 3.6 lakh property holders, demonstrating substantial compliance amid ongoing enforcement measures.
Digital Payment Adoption Reaches New Heights
A remarkable 62% of taxpayers, contributing Rs 383 crore, opted for digital payment channels, while the remaining 38% paid Rs 267 crore through traditional offline methods. The civic administration has facilitated this digital transition by providing multiple payment options including UPI, QR codes, debit and credit cards, net banking, NEFT/RTGS, and IMPS facilities.
"With the facility of paying taxes from home in a safe and transparent manner, citizens' inclination towards online options increased significantly," stated NMMC Commissioner Kailas Shinde, highlighting the convenience and security driving this digital shift.
Enforcement Actions Against Defaulters Intensify
To meet its ambitious target of collecting approximately Rs 1,000 crore by March 31, the NMMC has implemented stringent measures against tax defaulters. The property tax department has issued notices and seized properties of numerous defaulters, with 77 properties already attached in the city.
"Officers from all divisional offices were given responsibility for this action, and information on defaulters was updated through area-wise planning," explained an official, noting that action will continue against as many defaulters as possible in the coming days.
Recovery Efforts and Communication Strategies
The civic administration has recovered approximately Rs 39 crore through these enforcement actions. Additionally, 1,608 large arrears cases received seizure notices with seven-day and 48-hour advance warnings. The NMMC has employed proactive communication strategies, sending links for tax payment through SMS and WhatsApp messages repeatedly throughout the year.
"We are currently taking seizure action on industrial properties, and soon seizure action will be taken on commercial and business properties as well," revealed an official, indicating the comprehensive scope of enforcement measures.
Challenges and Future Directions
Despite the overall success, some taxpayers reported experiencing online payment failures, highlighting areas for technical improvement. Commissioner Shinde emphasized that property owners with substantial pending arrears will soon have their names publicly announced, signaling more stringent actions moving forward.
"It was important to make necessary funds available for the development of the city and urged every property owner to fulfil his duty of paying taxes promptly," Shinde asserted, connecting tax compliance directly to urban development initiatives.
The NMMC's dual approach of facilitating digital convenience while enforcing compliance through property seizures demonstrates a balanced strategy to maximize revenue collection for civic infrastructure and services.
