The Yamunanagar-Jagadhri Municipal Corporation has launched an intensive pre-monsoon drive to eliminate the chronic problem of waterlogging that plagues the twin cities every rainy season. With the monsoon clouds approaching, civic authorities are leaving no stone unturned in their preparations to ensure smooth drainage and prevent urban flooding.
A Multi-Pronged Strategy for Drainage
At the heart of the Municipal Corporation's plan is a massive cleaning operation targeting the city's extensive network of drains and sewers. Officials have confirmed that the work to desilt and clear major drains is already in full swing across all wards. The focus is not just on primary channels but also on smaller, connecting drains that often get clogged, leading to localized flooding.
Municipal Commissioner Mrs. Sushma Singh is personally overseeing the anti-waterlogging measures. She has directed the engineering and sanitation departments to work in close coordination to meet the pre-monsoon deadline. The corporation has allocated a significant budget of approximately ₹1.5 crore specifically for these pre-monsoon activities, underscoring the seriousness of the initiative.
Infrastructure Upgrades and New Projects
Beyond cleaning, the strategy involves crucial infrastructure upgrades. The corporation is actively identifying and repairing vulnerable spots where water accumulation is a recurring issue. This includes improving the gradient of roads and pavements to facilitate natural water runoff towards the drains.
One of the key projects in the pipeline is the construction of new, covered drains in several problematic areas. These modern drains are expected to significantly enhance the carrying capacity of the stormwater system. The engineering wing has been tasked with completing inspections of all pumping stations and ensuring they are fully operational before the first heavy downpour.
The civic body has also established a dedicated control room to monitor the situation during rains. Citizens will be encouraged to report waterlogging incidents to this control room, enabling a quicker response from field staff equipped with necessary pumps and tools.
Accountability and Public Cooperation
The Municipal Corporation is emphasizing accountability in this drive. Zone-wise officers have been made responsible for the work in their respective areas. Regular reviews and field inspections are being conducted to assess progress. The commissioner has warned of strict action against any lapses or delays in the execution of these critical tasks.
However, officials also highlight the need for public cooperation. Residents are being urged not to dispose of garbage and plastic waste into drains, as this is a primary cause of blockages.
