UP's Women Empowerment Initiative Revolutionizes Rural Economic Landscape
The Uttar Pradesh state government announced on Sunday that its comprehensive push for women empowerment is fundamentally transforming the rural economy, with the UP State Rural Livelihood Mission (UPSRLM) emerging as the primary catalyst for this widespread change.
Massive Participation in Self-Help Groups
"Under the mission, nearly 10.5 million women across the state have joined self-help groups and are now successfully running their own enterprises, marking a profound shift toward financial independence at the grassroots level," stated a state government spokesperson. This unprecedented participation represents one of the largest women-led economic movements in the country.
Officials confirmed that sustained implementation of welfare schemes at the village level has resulted in a noticeable increase in women's incomes and a significant surge in rural entrepreneurship. The flagship 'Lakhpati Didi' campaign, designed to enable women to earn at least ₹1 lakh annually through sustainable livelihood activities, has gained remarkable momentum across all districts.
Strategic Focus on Economic Growth Engines
The spokesperson elaborated that over the past nine years, the state government has strategically focused on strengthening women-led self-help groups as engines of economic growth. Under the rural livelihood mission, approximately 1.85 million women have been registered as 'Lakhpati Didis', achieving the ambitious income target.
The state's comprehensive approach aims to link SHG members with stable income sources through multiple strategies:
- Assigning skill-based responsibilities tailored to local opportunities
- Facilitating improved access to credit and financial resources
- Creating direct market linkages for products and services
- Developing sustainable livelihood models across sectors
Innovative Banking Access Initiative
A major innovation under the mission has been the 'One Gram Panchayat, One BC Sakhi' initiative. The state established an ambitious target of deploying BC Sakhis (banking correspondent agents) in all 57,000 gram panchayats to ensure universal financial access.
Significant progress has been made toward this goal, with 50,225 women already trained for the BC Sakhi role, representing substantial coverage across rural Uttar Pradesh.
Financial Impact and Service Delivery
The trained BC Sakhis have created a remarkable financial infrastructure in rural areas. Approximately 40,000 active BC Sakhis are currently handling financial transactions worth nearly ₹40,000 crore, facilitating essential doorstep banking services that include:
- Convenient deposits and withdrawals for rural residents
- Efficient pension disbursement to beneficiaries
- Widespread adoption of digital payment systems
- Financial literacy and inclusion programs
- Access to government scheme benefits
This comprehensive approach to women's economic empowerment through the UPSRLM represents a model for rural transformation, combining financial inclusion, skill development, and entrepreneurship support to create sustainable livelihoods at scale.
