Belagavi POCSO Court Delivers 30-Year Sentence in Minor Assault Case
A Special POCSO fast track court in Belagavi has handed down a stringent 30-year prison sentence to a convict found guilty of sexually assaulting a minor. The additional district and sessions court, presided over by Judge C M Pushpalatha, also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the accused, Laxman Maruti Karagund, aged 24, from Deshnur.
Details of the Crime and Investigation
The case dates back to December 28, 2023, when Karagund lured the minor girl onto a motorcycle under the false pretense of marriage. He then transported her across state lines, traveling to Goa and Miraj via Khanapur. Upon discovering the incident, the girl's parents promptly filed a formal complaint at the Nesargi police station.
The investigation was led by then CPI Raghavendra Havaldar, who meticulously gathered evidence and submitted a comprehensive chargesheet to the trial court. The prosecution's case was robustly supported by the testimony of 10 witnesses, 71 documents, and 16 exhibits, which collectively established the guilt of the accused beyond reasonable doubt.
Legal Proceedings and Verdict
During the trial, Special Public Prosecutor LV Patil of the POCSO court effectively represented the government, arguing for maximum punishment under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Judge Pushpalatha, after careful consideration of all evidence, found Karagund guilty of the heinous crime.
In addition to the prison term and fine, the court directed the District Legal Authority to provide Rs 4 lakh in compensation to the survivor. This compensation aims to support her recovery and future well-being, acknowledging the severe trauma inflicted by the offense.
