In a dramatic turn of events, a man accused in a rioting case was shot in the leg by police after he allegedly launched a knife attack on a police team while in custody. The incident occurred during the reconstruction of a crime scene in Gujarat's Surendranagar district.
The Attack During Crime Scene Reconstruction
The accused, identified as Divyaraj alias Bull Shiva Borana, was taken by the Limbdi police to Shiyani village on Tuesday, December 31, 2025. The purpose was to carry out a reconstruction panchnama at a location where he had allegedly hidden a weapon used in a previous crime. The visit took place between 5 pm and 6 pm.
According to police officials, Borana led the team to a spot where he had stashed a kuhaadi (axe). However, he also retrieved a chhari (knife) from the same hiding place. Without warning, he allegedly used the knife to attack the police personnel present.
Police Response and Injury
In response to the sudden assault, Sub-Inspector V M Kodiyatar drew his service pistol. He fired five rounds in self-defence. One of the bullets struck Borana in his right leg, below the knee.
Surendranagar SP Premsukh Delu stated, "This accused has several previous FIRs against him. During reconstruction of the crime scene, he showed the police team the weapons he used during the clash. While the seizure process was underway, he picked up a chhari (knife) and attacked the police team."
SP Delu added that the injured accused was immediately rushed to a government hospital in Limbdi for initial treatment. He was later transferred to CU Shah Medical College and Hospital in Surendranagar for further medical care.
Background of the Accused and Legal Proceedings
Borana's legal troubles are extensive. He was initially booked on December 2, 2025, under relevant sections of the BNS (Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita), including rioting. The case stemmed from an allegation that he and others attacked a shop owner at his residence over a dispute concerning the purchase of grains.
Following this, Borana was arrested on December 28. The Limbdi police had successfully obtained remand from a local court to further their investigation.
DySP V M Rabari of the Limbdi Division revealed the accused's long criminal history. "There are a total of 13 previous cases against Divyaraj Borana including assault, prohibition, gambling, as well as rioting," DySP Rabari told The Indian Express.
He further noted that at the time of his arrest on December 28, Borana was already a wanted man in three separate cases: the rioting case, a prohibition case, and a case of criminal intimidation. Additionally, he was found to be in breach of an externment notice (tadipaar).
In light of the knife attack on the police team, authorities confirmed that a second FIR for attempt to murder would be registered against Borana at the Limbdi police station. This new case will be in addition to the existing rioting charges he already faces.
