Ambala IG Issues Directive for Traffic Police to Use Body-Worn Cameras
In a significant move to enhance transparency and accountability, Ambala Range Inspector General Pankaj Nain has mandated that traffic police personnel wear body cameras while on duty. This directive was announced during a review meeting held at the range office in Ambala Cantonment, focusing on strengthening road safety measures and improving traffic management efficiency across the region.
Key Initiatives to Curb Traffic Violations
The meeting, attended by traffic police officials from Ambala district, addressed critical issues such as motorists jumping red lights and the challenges in issuing challans to violators. IG Nain emphasized the installation of cameras at traffic signals to monitor and deter such offenses. Additionally, he instructed that body-worn cameras be used to record interactions between police and traffic violators, ensuring a clear record in case of disputes or controversies.
Comprehensive Review of Surveillance Systems
A thorough assessment of CCTV cameras installed on national and state highways was conducted during the session. The IG stressed the importance of keeping all cameras fully operational and effectively covering roadways to enhance surveillance. He also directed the installation of information boards at prominent locations to alert the public about CCTV monitoring, encouraging voluntary compliance with traffic rules.
Focus on Accident Prevention and Inter-Departmental Coordination
IG Nain highlighted the need to identify accident-prone spots and collaborate with relevant departments for remedial actions. The meeting underscored the importance of joint efforts with the Transport Department to ensure effective implementation of traffic regulations. Strict measures, including the use of online challan systems supported by CCTV footage, will be enforced against red-light jumpers, with violations being tracked and penalized electronically.
Regional Implementation and Future Steps
The directives issued by IG Pankaj Nain will be extended to all three districts under the Ambala range: Ambala, Kurukshetra, and Yamunanagar. This initiative aims to create a more transparent and efficient traffic management system, ultimately reducing road accidents and promoting safer driving practices among the public.
