Amritsar Airport Implements Heightened Security After Drone Sighting

Security agencies in Amritsar have significantly escalated their protective measures at Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport in response to the recent sighting of a drone in the immediate vicinity. This incident has prompted a comprehensive review of safety protocols and led to operational disruptions, including the temporary closure of airspace.

High-Level Security Meeting Convenes to Address Threat

A critical high-level meeting was promptly organized, bringing together senior representatives from multiple security agencies. This assembly included officials from the Indian Air Force, who collaborated to thoroughly assess the potential threat posed by the drone and to meticulously evaluate the existing safety frameworks in place at the airport.

Airport director Bhupender Singh emphasized that all necessary precautions were immediately activated to safeguard airport operations. "We conducted a detailed review of our surveillance systems and response strategies, subsequently reinforcing monitoring activities around the entire airport perimeter to prevent any security breaches," Singh stated, underscoring the proactive stance taken by the authorities.

FIR Registered and Investigation Underway

Senior Superintendent of Police for Amritsar (Rural), Suhail Qasim Mir, confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) has been formally registered in connection with the drone incident. Police teams are now actively engaged in a thorough investigation to trace the origin of the drone and ascertain its intended purpose.

"All available leads are being rigorously pursued, and we are carefully examining the possibility of involvement by local or foreign actors. No aspect is being overlooked in this inquiry," Mir explained, highlighting the seriousness with which the matter is being handled.

Operational Impact and Preliminary Findings

The drone was reportedly observed on Thursday, leading to immediate security responses. As a precautionary measure, the airspace over the airport was temporarily shut down for approximately one hour. This closure resulted in the diversion of several flights to ensure passenger safety and maintain operational integrity.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the drone might have been operated during a nearby marriage function. However, security agencies are maintaining a broad investigative scope, exploring all potential scenarios to rule out any malicious intent. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges airports face regarding unauthorized drone activities and the continuous need for robust security protocols.
