Andhra Pradesh High Court Urges Restraint in Political Discourse, Orders Security Measures

The Andhra Pradesh High Court, in a significant hearing on Sunday, issued strong observations regarding the conduct of politicians, emphasizing that public representatives must employ sober and restrained language in public life. The court stressed the importance of avoiding remarks that could hurt or provoke others, highlighting that maintaining peace and harmony in society is a shared responsibility of both citizens and law enforcement agencies.

Petition Filed by YSRCP Leader's Wife Seeks Protection

The remarks were delivered during the hearing of an urgent petition filed by Ambati Vijayalakshmi, the wife of YSRCP leader and former minister Ambati Rambabu. She sought police protection for their residence following recent incidents of violence, which the court admitted for hearing as a house motion due to its urgent nature.

Background of Tensions and Violent Incidents

The bench noted that tensions escalated after Ambati Rambabu made obscene and provocative remarks against Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu on January 31. Subsequently, protests and attacks were reported at his residence and office in Guntur and Siddharthnagar. The situation was brought under control only after his arrest later that night, underscoring the volatile nature of the political climate.

Allegations of Mob Violence and Lack of Action

During the hearing, the petitioner's counsel submitted that mobs attacked the house for several hours, causing property damage, issuing threats, and later hurling petrol bombs. He alleged that no cases were registered against the attackers, expressing grave concern over the safety of family members in light of these violent acts.

Court Directs Government on Preventive Measures

In response, the court directed the government to ensure preventive measures and sought detailed information from the Guntur superintendent of police. The government informed the court that a police picket with 15 personnel had been deployed at the residence and assured that the situation was under control, though the court emphasized the need for ongoing vigilance.

Disposal of Petition with Verbal Directives

After recording the submissions, Justice Y Lakshmana Rao disposed of the petition. However, he verbally directed authorities to continue providing adequate security and to take all necessary steps to prevent any recurrence of violence, reinforcing the court's commitment to public safety and order.

This case highlights the critical role of judicial oversight in curbing political violence and promoting responsible discourse among public figures, setting a precedent for future conduct in Andhra Pradesh's political landscape.
