Arunachal Pradesh Police ASI Fatally Trampled by Wild Elephant in Lohit District

A 40-year-old Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Arunachal Pradesh Police was tragically trampled to death by a wild elephant in Lohit district on Saturday morning. The victim, identified as Martin Lego, was posted at the Sunpura police station, according to reports from Dibrugarh-based journalist Rajib Dutta.

Details of the Fatal Incident

The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 AM at Patthar Ghat, where Lego had gone with two friends to spend leisure time near the river. Police officials stated that the trio unexpectedly encountered the elephant. While the two friends managed to escape unharmed, Lego was caught and fatally attacked by the animal.

An unnatural death case has been officially registered at the Sunpura police station. Following a post-mortem examination, the body was handed over to his family at Jeko village for the final rites.

Medical Findings and Police Investigation

Lohit district Superintendent of Police Thutan Jamba provided preliminary medical findings, indicating severe traumatic injuries. “Doctors reported broken ribs, diaphragm damage, and punctured internal organs,” he said, adding that the final post-mortem report is still awaited.

SP Jamba noted that the elephant appeared to be injured, which may have triggered its aggressive behavior. He emphasized that no similar attacks had been reported in that area previously. “I have spoken to the deputy commissioner. An advisory will be issued asking villagers to avoid forest areas for now. The district forest officer has assured that efforts will be made to capture the elephant,” Jamba added.

Condolences and Family Background

Tezu MLA Mohesh Chai visited the bereaved family in Jeko village to offer condolences and support. Martin Lego is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son, leaving behind a grieving family and community.

Context of Wildlife Attacks on Police Personnel

This tragedy marks the second fatal wildlife attack on state police personnel within this month. On February 2, head constable Chikseng Manpang, aged 33, was killed by a tiger near Mayodia while riding his motorcycle from Anini to Roing. These incidents highlight the ongoing risks faced by law enforcement in regions with significant wildlife presence.

The increasing frequency of such encounters underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and wildlife management strategies in vulnerable areas.
