Ballia: Police catch rape accused in 7 hours, suspect shot

In a swift and decisive operation, the police in Uttar Pradesh's Ballia district apprehended a man accused of raping a 12-year-old girl within a mere seven hours of the crime. The dramatic arrest occurred late on Thursday night in the Ubhaon police station area after the suspect opened fire on a patrolling team.

Swift Police Action Leads to Arrest

The incident unfolded when a police team was conducting a routine night patrol near Mubarakpur Road around 12:35 AM on Friday. Their vigilance paid off when they spotted an individual whose behaviour and appearance raised immediate suspicion. As the officers moved to surround him, the situation escalated rapidly.

The suspect, later identified as Sablu Rajbhar, opened fire on the police party in a desperate attempt to evade capture. The police, acting in self-defence, returned fire. In the ensuing exchange, Rajbhar was struck by a bullet in his right leg, incapacitating him.

Identity and Confession of the Accused

The injured man was quickly identified as Sablu Rajbhar, a resident of Mujauna village under the Ubhaon police station jurisdiction. Upon interrogation, Rajbhar confessed to the heinous crime. He admitted to having raped the minor girl on Thursday evening, a case for which he was already wanted by the local police.

The young victim was promptly provided medical care and admitted to a hospital for treatment. The police confirmed that further legal action in the case is actively underway.

Recovery of Illegal Weapon and Official Statement

From the apprehended accused, the police recovered crucial evidence: an illegal pistol of .315 bore, along with one empty cartridge and one live cartridge. This recovery underscores the dangerous nature of the individual confronted by the police patrol.

Commenting on the operation, Circle Officer of Rasra, Alok Kumar Gupta, provided an update on the suspect's condition. "The injured person is currently undergoing treatment at Sadar Hospital in Ballia," stated Gupta, confirming the details of the encounter and the ongoing investigation.

This rapid response by the Ballia police highlights a significant breakthrough in a sensitive case, ensuring that the alleged perpetrator was taken off the streets in record time, preventing any potential further harm.
