Banda Man Allegedly Forces Wife into Halala Practice After Dowry Dispute
A disturbing case has emerged from Banda, Uttar Pradesh, where a man is allegedly forcing his wife to undergo the controversial Islamic practice of Halala so that he can remarry her. This incident follows a bitter dispute over dowry demands that led to the woman being thrown out of her marital home.
What is Halala?
Halala is a highly contentious practice within some Muslim communities. In this custom, a divorced woman must marry another man, consummate the marriage, and then obtain a divorce from him before she is permitted to remarry her former husband. This practice is often criticized for exploiting women and violating their dignity.
The Dowry Harassment Allegations
According to the police complaint filed at the Mataundh police station, the victim, Sakina, hails from Goyra Mugli village in Banda district. She married Javed on June 17, 2025. However, her marital life quickly turned sour due to relentless dowry demands.
Sakina alleged that after moving to her in-laws' house, her husband Javed, father-in-law Razzaq, mother-in-law Bhoori, and sister-in-law Tafsina expressed dissatisfaction with the dowry provided. They reportedly demanded an additional Rs 2 lakh in cash and a motorcycle.
When these demands were not met, the family subjected Sakina to severe mental and physical torture. The harassment culminated on December 24 last year when she was forcibly thrown out of the house.
Police Action and FIR Registration
Following Sakina's complaint, the Mataundh police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the four accused individuals. The charges include dowry harassment and assault.
Sandeep Singh, the in-charge of Mataundh police station, confirmed the registration of the FIR. He stated that the investigation is ongoing to address the serious allegations, including the forced Halala demand.
