Barra Police Arrest Two for Mobile Snatching, Car Theft

In a swift operation, the Barra police in Kanpur apprehended two individuals on Tuesday for their alleged involvement in a mobile phone snatching and car theft incident. The arrests led to the recovery of two looted mobile phones and a stolen vehicle, shedding light on a crime spree targeting an intoxicated victim.

Police Action Based on Informer Tip and Evidence

The breakthrough in the case came after the police received specific information from an informer. The investigation was being conducted under the already registered case number 365/2025, which initially invoked sections 316(2) and 309(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The case was under the charge of Sub-Inspector Rakesh Kumar Yadav from the Barra police station.

During the probe, the officer utilized multiple sources to identify the suspects. Informer tips, CCTV footage, and other collected evidence were crucial in pinpointing the two unknown persons, leading to their arrest.

Accused Identified and Their Modus Operandi

The arrested individuals have been named as Krishna Awasthi (22), son of Ravindra Kumar Awasthi and a resident of Jarauli Phase-1 in Barra, and Avinash alias Aabhash Kumar (20), son of Naresh Kumar, who lives in Sabzi Mandi Karahi, Barra.

During interrogation, the accused confessed to targeting a person in an inebriated state on Karahi road. They snatched his mobile phones and took his car. Fearing identification, they forcibly dropped the victim from the vehicle en route. Subsequently, they attempted to sell the stolen car but failed. As a result, they abandoned the vehicle near Nala road under a high-tension line in the jungles of Jarauli Phase-2.

Recovery of Stolen Goods and Additional Charges

Facing a financial crunch, the duo then tried to sell the snatched mobile phones. However, their plans were foiled when the police caught them. The law enforcement officials successfully recovered the two looted mobile phones from their possession. Based on this recovery, the police added section 317(2) of the BNS to the existing charges in the case.

Furthermore, the vehicle abandoned by the accused in the Jarauli Phase-2 jungle area has also been recovered. The investigation also revealed that the accused had allegedly attempted a theft at the house of one Anurag Verma in Barra on December 6, indicating a pattern of criminal activity.
