Bhagalpur Police Uncover Major Illegal Drug Operation in City Raid

In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, Bhagalpur police successfully dismantled an illegal drug racket operating within the city on Friday. The operation led to the arrest of a suspect with a criminal history and the seizure of a substantial quantity of restricted pharmaceutical substances.

Targeted Raid Leads to Major Seizure

Acting on specific intelligence regarding the unlawful sale and distribution of intoxicating medicines, a specialized police team conducted a targeted raid at a suspected hideout located in Karamat Ali Lane, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Tatarpur police station area. The operation resulted in the arrest of Md Farhan, an individual known to have prior criminal antecedents.

During the raid, authorities confiscated a massive haul of restricted drugs, including 8,040 bottles of codeine-laced cough syrup and 21,000 benzodiazepine tablets. These substances were allegedly being stored illegally without proper prescriptions or official records, intended for unauthorized sale.

Legal Framework and Police Investigation

According to police sources, codeine-based syrups are strictly regulated under both the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. These restrictions are in place due to the widespread misuse of such medications as intoxicants, posing significant public health risks.

City SP Shailendra Kumar Singh confirmed that the raid was executed based on credible intelligence about the illegal drug trade. He emphasized the importance of such operations in curbing the distribution of controlled substances within the community.

Police are currently interrogating the accused, Md Farhan, to uncover the full extent of the operation. Investigators are focusing on determining whether the seized drugs were being supplied to local medical shops or sold directly to drug addicts through an illicit network.

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Efforts

A formal case has been registered under the NDPS Act, 1985, and the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, marking the beginning of legal proceedings against those involved. The Bhagalpur police have reiterated their commitment to combating drug-related crimes and ensuring strict enforcement of narcotics laws.

This bust highlights the ongoing challenges authorities face in regulating pharmaceutical products that are prone to abuse. It also underscores the critical role of community intelligence and proactive policing in identifying and dismantling illegal drug networks.

The seizure of such a large quantity of restricted medicines is expected to disrupt local drug supply chains and serve as a deterrent to similar illegal activities in the region. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as the investigation progresses.
