A 70-year-old man has tragically died after falling from the porch of the newly constructed Bhopal Municipal Corporation headquarters, reigniting urgent concerns over significant safety lapses in the Rs 40 crore structure. The incident has cast a harsh spotlight on the building's hazardous conditions, which remain unaddressed despite its substantial investment.
Details of the Fatal Accident and Immediate Response
The victim, identified as Shyam Sundar Saxena, a resident of Kokta Multi-storey, was taken to JP Hospital in a BMC vehicle on Thursday following the accident. Later in the evening, district hospital in-charge and civil surgeon Dr. Sanjay Jain confirmed that Saxena had succumbed to his injuries. Police have been formally notified, and a preliminary medico-legal case has been registered to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
The accident occurred around 4 pm when Saxena fell through a dangerous 1.5–2 ft gap in the first-floor porch boundary wall. The building, strategically located on Link Road No 2, has not yet been officially inaugurated, raising questions about why such hazardous areas were accessible to the public.
Building Branded a "Death Trap" with Multiple Safety Defects
In the wake of this tragedy, the headquarters has been branded a "death trap" by concerned observers after another critical defect was uncovered: an open shaft near the rear stairs, completely lacking any protective wall or railing. This oversight leaves employees and visitors exposed to a sheer drop, compounding the building's safety risks.
Despite ongoing unfinished furniture, electrical, and construction work, several key branches including Housing for All, Civil, PR, and Electrical have already shifted into the premises. More departments are currently being relocated, even as these life-threatening hazards persist.
Official Inquiry and Assurances Amid Growing Concerns
BMC In-charge engineer Pramod Malviya has confirmed that an inquiry is underway to determine how Saxena accessed the porch, noting that the Housing for All office is situated on the seventh floor. Malviya has publicly assured that all open and hazardous areas are being sealed promptly to prevent further incidents.
However, this assurance comes against a backdrop of mounting public anxiety over the building's safety standards. The Rs 40 crore investment in the structure now faces intense scrutiny, with calls for comprehensive safety audits and immediate remedial actions before any further occupancy.
