Bhopal Police on High Alert Following Viral Street Racing Videos
Police authorities in Bhopal have been put on high alert after a series of viral videos surfaced showing youngsters engaging in dangerous speeding and performing reckless stunts on key city roads. The footage, which has been widely circulated across social media platforms in recent days, has prompted law enforcement to warn of strict legal action under multiple statutes.
Reckless Behavior Captured on Camera
The disturbing clips show motorcyclists weaving dangerously through traffic lanes and SUV drivers racing on nearly deserted roads during late-night hours. In one particularly alarming video recorded on VIP Road in the Koh-e-Fiza area, vehicle occupants are seen standing through sunroofs while the cars are in motion, demonstrating blatant disregard for safety protocols.
Police officials have emphasized that such behavior creates grave risks not only for the offenders themselves but also for unsuspecting commuters who might be sharing the road. According to official traffic police data, overspeeding and drunk driving continue to be the leading causes of road accidents throughout the city.
Late-Night Violations and Police Response
Authorities acknowledge that while regular checking drives are conducted at key junctions until late evening, violators often exploit deserted stretches after midnight when police presence diminishes. "They are booked under the Motor Vehicles Act as well as relevant sections of BNS, and preventive action under BNSS is taken when required," explained a senior police officer.
Shyamla Hills Station House Officer Bhupinder Kaur Sandhu revealed that special checking operations are regularly carried out in the Boat Club area, where vehicles involved in reckless driving are immediately seized and cases forwarded to court. "Almost every day, one or two stunt riders are caught and fined," she stated, while emphasizing the need for speed-monitoring CCTV cameras in the area to better control such offenders.
Sandhu added that police take immediate action whenever locals or shopkeepers report incidents of reckless driving. She noted that during peak evening hours, the area remains sufficiently crowded that such dangerous incidents are less likely to occur.
Identified Racing Hotspots
Airport Road—which falls under the jurisdiction of Gandhi Nagar, Koh-e-Fiza, and Parwalia police stations—has emerged as a particular favorite for late-night racing enthusiasts. "It's a wide highway and youngsters gather there after midnight to drive dangerously," confirmed a senior police officer.
Koh-e-Fiza Station House Officer KG Shukla verified that a recent viral video indeed showed people standing through sunroofs on VIP Road. Police currently maintain four fixed checking points until midnight at Raja Bhoj Statue, Khanugaon, Karbala, and Lalghati, followed by continuous night patrols to deter violations.
Shukla cited a recent case where a biker was chased, arrested, and subsequently fined Rs 10,000 by the court as evidence of their enforcement efforts. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Basant Kaul announced that a special night-checking drive will be launched to specifically target these dangerous activities.
The police department's comprehensive approach combines regular patrols, fixed checking points, legal action under multiple laws, and plans for technological enhancements to address what they describe as a serious public safety concern that has gained attention through social media circulation.
