Bilaspur Jeweller Brutally Attacked in Rs 3.35 Crore Robbery, City on High Alert
A horrific late-night robbery in Bilaspur has sent shockwaves through the city, prompting a widespread police alert after a jeweller was viciously attacked with a hammer and robbed of gold and cash valued at a staggering Rs 3.35 crore. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday night, has left the victim, Santosh Tiwari, with severe injuries requiring intensive medical care.
Violent Ambush on Returning Jeweller
According to police reports, Santosh Tiwari, who operates a jewellery shop, was driving home after closing his business for the day. He was carrying the day's stock in his vehicle, a routine practice. As he travelled, a white car parked ahead on the road allegedly rammed his vehicle, forcing him to stop abruptly.
What followed was a terrifying assault. A group of approximately half a dozen attackers emerged, picked a fight with Tiwari, and then escalated the violence dramatically. One assailant pulled out a pistol, while others began beating Tiwari with a hammer and the butt of the firearm. The brutal attack left the jeweller bleeding profusely and with serious injuries.
Massive Haul and Escape
The attackers then fled the scene with Tiwari's car, which contained approximately 2.2 kilograms of gold ornaments and Rs 3.5 lakh in cash. The total estimated value of the stolen items is Rs 3.35 crore. Despite his critical condition, Tiwari managed to reach his home with assistance from a relative. From there, he was taken to the police station and subsequently admitted to a private hospital for urgent treatment.
Medical officials confirmed that Tiwari suffered deep head wounds from the assault, requiring around 50 stitches. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for monitoring and recovery.
CCTV Evidence and Police Response
The entire assault was captured on CCTV cameras installed in the Sarkanda region. The footage reportedly shows the attackers mercilessly beating the jeweller. In a chilling detail, one suspect is seen allegedly brandishing a pistol to ward off any bystanders who might have intervened.
Police investigators have recovered crucial evidence from the crime scene, including a magazine and live cartridges. Tiwari's stolen car was later found abandoned on the outskirts of the city. Officials noted that there was no confirmation from residents about hearing any gunshots during the incident, suggesting the pistol may have been used primarily for intimidation.
Citywide Manhunt and Investigation
In response to the brazen crime, Bilaspur Inspector General of Police Ramgopal Garg personally visited the crime scene. He has directed officers to intensify checks and patrols across Bilaspur city, the district, and neighbouring districts. A comprehensive investigation has been launched, involving:
- Sealing of the crime scene area
- Deployment of forensic experts for evidence collection
- Utilization of a dog squad and fingerprint specialists
- A night-long search operation to apprehend the suspects
Police officials revealed that the vehicles left behind by the suspects—a car and a two-wheeler—appear to have been stolen. This detail strongly suggests that the robbery was pre-planned and meticulously organized by the criminal gang.
Ongoing Efforts and Special Team Formation
Investigators are currently analysing multiple CCTV feeds from along the victim's route to identify the suspects and trace their movements before and after the attack. A special police team has been formed specifically to track down the gang responsible for this high-value robbery.
As of the latest reports, no arrests have been made in connection with the case. The police search operation remains active, with authorities urging the public to come forward with any information that could assist in identifying the perpetrators. This incident has highlighted concerns about security in the region, prompting calls for enhanced measures to protect business owners transporting valuable goods.
