BJP Functionary Apprehended for Alleged Role in Gold Chain Robbery
In a significant development, the Coimbatore district police have arrested a state-level functionary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for his alleged involvement in aiding a group of robbers. The arrest was made on Saturday, following a detailed investigation into a robbery case reported earlier this month.
Details of the Arrested Individual
The arrested BJP functionary has been identified as J Vivek, 36, a resident of Rs Puram in Coimbatore city. Vivek holds a prominent position as a state-level executive committee member of the BJP Scheduled Caste Morcha, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations against him.
Background of the Robbery Case
The case originated from a complaint filed by M Abinesh, 21, an engineering student from Pollachi who studies in a college within Coimbatore district. According to police reports, the incident occurred on February 3, when Abinesh was lured to the Salem-Kochi National Highway under false pretenses.
Upon arrival, he was forcibly pulled into a car by M Sarvesh, 21 of Theni district, along with Vignesh and two other accomplices. The group then drove him to an isolated location near KG Chavadi, where they threatened him at knifepoint and snatched his gold chain weighing two sovereigns before abandoning him at the scene.
Police Investigation and Breakthrough
Abinesh immediately lodged a formal complaint with the KG Chavadi police station, prompting the registration of a case and the initiation of a thorough investigation. Police teams worked diligently to trace the suspects, leading to the arrest of M Sarvesh in Theni on Friday.
During subsequent interrogations, Sarvesh made a crucial confession that implicated J Vivek in the crime. He revealed that Vivek had not only provided the car used in the robbery but had also actively assisted in the criminal act. Furthermore, Sarvesh disclosed that he had handed over the stolen gold chain to Vivek with instructions to sell it.
Arrest and Recovery of Evidence
Acting on this information, the Coimbatore police swiftly arrested J Vivek on Saturday. The investigation team successfully recovered the stolen gold chain and seized the vehicle that was allegedly used during the commission of the crime. Both Vivek and Sarvesh have been remanded to judicial custody as legal proceedings continue.
Ongoing Manhunt and Broader Implications
Police authorities have confirmed that they have launched an extensive manhunt to apprehend the remaining individuals involved in this robbery. The case has drawn significant attention due to the political affiliation of one of the accused, raising questions about accountability and law enforcement vigilance.
This incident underscores the commitment of Coimbatore police to pursue all leads regardless of the social or political standing of those involved. The recovery of evidence and swift arrests demonstrate effective investigative work in addressing serious crimes within the community.
