Rajasthan CID Issues 'Leave India' Notice to British Tourists Over Pro-Palestine Stickers
British Tourists Get 'Leave India' Notice Over Palestine Stickers

The Rajasthan police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) took decisive action on Monday by serving a 'leave India' notice to two British tourists. This stern measure came after authorities discovered that the individuals had placed stickers advocating for Palestine and opposing Israel in various public areas of Pushkar, a town in the Ajmer district.

Discovery of Controversial Stickers

The incident initially came to light on January 21, when local authorities reported the presence of these stickers in multiple public spaces across Pushkar. The stickers prominently displayed messages such as "Free Palestine, Boycott Israel," which quickly drew attention due to their political nature.

CID Investigation and Findings

Following the reports, a dedicated CID team was mobilised to thoroughly investigate the matter. Their investigation concluded that the act of placing such stickers not only violated local sensitivities but also contravened the tourists' visa regulations. According to Additional Superintendent of Police (CID) Rajesh Meena, the two individuals were identified as Lewis Gabriel Dee, aged 36, and Anueshi Emma Christine, also 36, who had arrived in India on tourist visas.

"Engaging in activities that disrespect other nations while on Indian soil is a clear violation of visa rules," Meena stated emphatically. He further explained that under the provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act of 2025, the CID issued the notice, which mandates their immediate departure from India.

Context of Pushkar's Tourist Demographics

Pushkar is renowned for its significant influx of Israeli tourists, with approximately 10,000 to 11,000 visiting the town annually. Currently, the town hosts nearly 2,000 Israeli visitors, many of whom frequent establishments connected to the Chabad community. This makes Pushkar a particularly popular destination for this demographic, adding a layer of sensitivity to the situation.

Response and Aftermath

Despite the controversy surrounding the stickers, no formal complaints have been lodged by Israeli tourists regarding their presence. However, following the intervention of the CID, all offending stickers have been promptly removed from public places. Additionally, authorities conducted extra checks in areas where Israeli tourists typically congregate to ensure no further incidents occur.

The case highlights the strict enforcement of visa regulations in India, particularly concerning activities that may be deemed disrespectful to other nations. It also underscores the importance of adhering to local laws and cultural sensitivities while visiting foreign countries, especially in regions with diverse international visitors.
