The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday adjourned the hearing of petitions alleging irregularities in the West Bengal Police constable recruitment process for 2024 until June 8, as the state counsels failed to appear, reports Srishti Lakhotia.
Justice Amrita Sinha clarified that any appointment made in the interim would be subject to the final outcome of the writ petitions. Hearing two separate petitions, the court noted allegations that horizontal reservation protocols were flouted and posts reserved for the exempted category (EC) were illegally dereserved and opened to unreserved candidates.
The petitioners sought a restraint order on filling up the vacant posts. They also pointed out that while the recruitment process concluded, appointment letters were withheld due to Model Code of Conduct. They voiced apprehensions that the state might immediately issue letters to candidates.
The court's decision to adjourn the matter provides a temporary pause, but the petitioners remain concerned about potential hurried appointments. The next hearing on June 8 will be crucial in determining the fate of the recruitment process and the candidates involved.
