Calcutta HC Orders CBI SIT to Probe RG Kar Case Cover-Up

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to establish a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under its joint director (East) to investigate claims that certain aspects of the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case were suppressed or 'hushed up.'

Court Directives and Timeline

The court further instructed the SIT to submit a detailed status report of its investigation by June 25. This directive comes amid ongoing judicial scrutiny of the 2024 case, in which a trainee doctor was raped and murdered on the hospital premises.

Background of the Case

The crime occurred on August 9, 2024, and the High Court handed over the investigation to the CBI on August 13, 2024. On December 24, 2024, the victim's parents approached the High Court seeking a fresh investigation. Sanjay Roy was convicted on January 18, 2025, and sentenced to life imprisonment on January 20, 2025.

Subsequently, on January 24, 2025, the CBI moved the High Court seeking the death penalty for Roy, while Roy himself filed an appeal on July 9, 2025, seeking acquittal. On August 28, Justice Tirthankar Ghosh recused himself from hearing the matter. Later, a division bench of Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Md. Shabbar Rashidi released the case on March 11, 2026.

Ongoing Developments

This is a developing story, and further updates are expected as the SIT proceeds with its investigation. The High Court's intervention underscores the seriousness of the allegations and the need for a thorough probe into any potential cover-up.
