In a remarkable display of persistence, the Delhi Police successfully apprehended a 30-year-old carjacker following an extensive chase that spanned approximately 1,200 kilometers across multiple states. The accused, identified as Chandan, was arrested on Friday in connection with a vehicle robbery that occurred in Dwarka last month.
The Dwarka Carjacking Incident
The criminal episode began on September 27 when the complainant, a commercial vehicle driver, approached authorities with a disturbing account. According to police reports, the driver had encountered two men - later identified as Chandan and his associate Aamir - at the New Delhi railway station. The pair requested transportation to Dwarka, which the driver agreed to provide.
Once they reached their claimed destination in Dwarka, the situation took a violent turn. The two passengers asked the driver to take a detour toward Nala Road, where they abruptly stopped the vehicle. The men then physically assaulted the driver before fleeing with the car, leaving the victim injured and stranded.
Police Investigation and Technical Tracking
Following the complaint, authorities at the Dwarka Sector 23 police station registered a formal case of robbery under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. With limited initial leads, investigators turned to technological resources to track the criminals.
Police teams meticulously examined CCTV camera footage and employed technical surveillance methods to trace the movements of the accused. Their efforts eventually paid off when they detected the stolen vehicle's presence on the Yamuna Expressway near Agra, approximately 500 kilometers from the crime scene.
"The team acted swiftly and started chasing the car. The accused was already about 500 km ahead of the police team by then," stated DCP (Dwarka) Ankit Singh during a briefing about the operation.
The Epic Chase and Arrest
What followed was an extraordinary pursuit covering vast distances across northern India. Police teams demonstrated remarkable determination as they chased the suspects across state lines, ultimately covering approximately 1,200 kilometers before successfully apprehending Chandan.
The dramatic conclusion occurred in the Gouraol police station area of Bihar's Vaishali district, where authorities finally captured the accused. During the operation, police also successfully seized the stolen vehicle, recovering crucial evidence in the case.
During subsequent interrogation, Chandan revealed the surprising motive behind the carjacking. The accused confessed that he and his associate Aamir had stolen the vehicle specifically to transport illegal liquor during the Bihar elections, viewing it as an opportunity to earn quick money during the politically charged period.
The case highlights the evolving methods of criminal operations during election seasons and demonstrates the Delhi Police's commitment to pursuing criminals across jurisdictional boundaries. Authorities continue their search for the second accused, Aamir, who remains at large.
