Chennai Courier Gold Heist: Fake GST Officials Steal 2.4 Crore Jewellery
In a brazen case of impersonation and theft, two individuals, including an employee of a courier company, were arrested on Saturday in Chennai for posing as GST officials and stealing gold jewellery parcels containing approximately 1.5 kilograms, valued at a staggering 2.4 crore rupees. The elaborate scheme, which unfolded earlier this month, has sent shockwaves through the local business community and highlighted vulnerabilities in cargo security.
Complaint Leads to Investigation
The arrests stemmed from a formal complaint filed by V Ravalsingh, a 30-year-old entrepreneur who operates a private courier firm on Periyanayakan Street in the bustling Sowcarpet area. On February 6, Ravalsingh assigned two employees—Govaram, who works at his own company, and Jitender Kumar, an employee of another courier service operating from the same building—to collect the precious parcels from the cargo terminal at Meenambakkam airport.
The duo departed on a two-wheeler to retrieve the consignments but failed to return for several hours, with their mobile phones mysteriously switched off. Later that afternoon, Govaram contacted Ravalsingh using an auto-rickshaw driver's phone, recounting a harrowing tale. He claimed that two unidentified men, who introduced themselves as GST officials from Chengalpet, intercepted them near the Guindy flyover, confiscated the parcels and their mobile phones, forced them into an auto-rickshaw, and subsequently abandoned them near Perungalathur.
Police Uncover Inconsistencies
Based on Ravalsingh's detailed complaint, the Guindy police promptly registered a case and initiated a thorough investigation. However, suspicions arose when officers questioned the two employees separately and discovered glaring discrepancies in their accounts. While Jitender Kumar described the supposed GST officials as appearing to be Tamilians, Govaram insisted they looked like North Indians. This conflicting testimony prompted detectives to dig deeper into the incident.
Staged Robbery Revealed
Further probing unveiled a meticulously planned deception. It was revealed that Jitender Kumar had orchestrated the entire episode by calling associates from Rajasthan, who then staged the robbery. Govaram, who was unaware of the conspiracy, had been unwittingly drawn into the scheme. The police swiftly acted on this breakthrough, arresting Jitender Kumar, aged 31, and Dhanraj Sharma, aged 30, for their roles in the impersonation and theft.
